History
The stories of Kappa Alpha Psi’s “birth,” and its founders, are well known to all Kappa men; however, the Fraternity’s beginning in Seattle and the Puget Sound region is less known.
In September of 1948, a proud and enthusiastic contingent of Seattle Kappa men traveled to Oakland, California to attend the first Western Province Council Meeting. February 13, 1954, marked the establishment of the Seattle Alumni Chapter. Brother Ira Jones was the first Polemarch. On March 7, 1963, the Seattle Chapter acquired Incorporated status from the State of Washington (This process was repeated on April 29, 1980.) In February of 1968, Kappa Alpha Psi suffered a great loss in the death of its beloved Brother William “Czar” Meredith. He willed his home, located at 516 – 22nd Avenue East, to the Fraternity. In his memory, the house is now named the William “Czar” Meredith Memorial Kappa House.
From its birth in Seattle, Kappa Alpha Psi has continued to spread in the State of Washington. In January of 1980 KAPPA PI Chapter was chartered at Washington State University. The TACOMA ALUMNI Chapter was chartered in July of 1985; and the BELLEVUE ALUMNI Chapter was soon to follow in February of 1987.

Past Province Polemarchs

Ralph J. Bryson, The story of KAPPA ALPHA PSI, Fifth Edition, Page 277, authored, “David L, Mills of Seattle, WA, was appointed the nineteenth polemarch of the Western Province to succeed Edgar H. Bishop, who had served in that capacity since 1987.
A 1966 Gamma Eta initiate, after playing professional basketball in the American Basketball League, Province Polemarch Mills formed his own company as CEO. A native of Columbus, OH, Province Polemarch Mills took office at the 45th Western Council in Anchorage, AK on April 19, 1992.”
